2/19/2023 0 Comments Sleep no more 6th floor![]() I had a chance to catch up with Punchdrunk creative producer Colin Nightingale at the Immersive Design Summit on January 6th where I had a chance to talk to him about his journey into becoming an experiential designer for immersive theater, how immersive theater is being used for education and medical purposes, and the latest Punchdrunk productions which are all focused on blurring the line between what is reality. Sleep No More has been a catalyst to other types of experiential entertainment including escape rooms, site specific performances, immersive and interactive art museums, and the digital mediated versions of these experiences through virtual and augmented reality. Rather than sit in seats watching actors on a stage, audience members could explore an open world of 100 rooms across five floors, and make choices as to which actors to follow through the space or which parts of elaborate set design to inspect. It was a paradigm shift that broke the fourth wall, and encouraged audience members to become fully immersed within the experience. Sebastian D'Souza, photo editor of English daily Mumbai Mirror, who rushed to Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus station to shoot the now-iconic image of Kasab, says the city has rapidly returned to how things were, despite the carnage and the chaos.Punchdrunk’s immersive theater piece of Sleep No More opened in March 2011, and it’s inspired countless experiential designers of immersive theater, and virtual and augmented reality experiences. "It has been a great learning experience," Bharti adds. The re-organisation and retraining has involved closer cooperation with the Federal Bureau of Investigation and other international groups. I don't think there's anywhere in the world where militants have taken up five targets. Every audience member who enters the Sleep No More theater space has to wear an identical mask at all times. This was profoundly difficult for a couple of reasons. "We never thought that 10 people from Pakistan would land in Mumbai and engage five targets. So she decided she must have exited on another floor and started racing through the theater, trying to find her. Gallow Green, a larger rooftop bar to complement the Manderley, sits atop the building. The small indoor entrance to the sixth floor represents the train stop in a station, with a period advertisement board, train schedule, and newspaper booth (which serves as a box office for Sleep No More). It's not forgotten, but we go ahead with our lives and we make sure this does not happen again," says Farhang Jehani, one of the owners of the Leopold Café, the first place that was attacked by the terrorists.Īdditional Commissioner Deven Bharti, one of the policemen who interrogated the sole surviving militant Ajmal Kasab, the 21-year-old "highly motivated terrorist" whose trial is still on, admits to the failure by the security forces, in particular a "failure of imagination". The sixth floor of the building houses The Heath, a restaurant made to resemble a 1930s train car. Staffers say it is the sound of recovery, of the hotel coming back to life - the sound of defiance. I was really lucky in that, at the beginning on our ride up, I was singled out and dropped off at the 6th floor alone. It is SO MUCH FUN No two people will have the same experience. ![]() Perhaps (I need) to redeem myself," says Kang.Ī year after 10 Islamist militants swept ashore and laid deadly siege on Mumbai leaving over 180 people dead and a nation stunned, the historic Taj Mahal Palace hotel is buzzing with the sound of workmen. All the while, disturbing, erotic, and confusing scenes unfold in the different areas. But also that I act in a way that makes my family, who are no longer around, proud of me. "It's important for me to oversee this task of rebuilding and see (the hotel) better than before. ![]() I think it's my moral duty to be here, maybe more than that - something deeper," he says. "I thought about it for a minute and I thought, ''Yes, that is the right thing do''," he says.Īfter the siege, many people told him that he should move away from Mumbai. When he called his mother to say that the commandos had finally broken into his family's suite and had found them dead, huddled together in the bathroom - his wife cradling one son and the body of the other lying beside them - she had told him that he must do whatever he could for those still alive. Sitting in the hotel's Sea Lounge, Kang says that during those 60 terrible hours he received strength from his mother. At the time, his behaviour appeared remarkable, robotic even, but that was not the case. In the lobby of the 107-year-old building of the Taj, Kang became famous as the man who worked without sleep to try and save his guests.Įven after his family had perished - they were trapped in their room when the terrorists set the sixth floor on fire, and Kang had been speaking to his wife by phone until the very end - he refused to leave the hotel, insisting that he could help save the lives of others. ![]()
